About the Temple

Shri Ganesh Gayathri Temple

The main temple design and deities such as Kamakshi Ambal and Ekambareshwarar are in strict conformance with the agama sastra

Much has been said about the greatness of Sri Kamakshi of Kanchi. Kanchipuram is the only Mokshapuri in Southern India and is said to have hosted 1008 temples at some point in history. Symbolizing the sovereignty of nature, Kamakshi Devi is described as the Supreme Goddess of Tranquility and Beauty. Also referred to as Kamakshi Amman, the Goddess is observed as a form of Maa Parvati or Goddess Shakti. She is viewed as a manifestation of Goddess Tripura Sundari Devi or the universal mother goddess. Rajarajeswarai Sri Lalitha Tripurasundari manifested herself as Goddess Sri Kamakshi in Kamakoshtam of Kanchipuram.

In Kanchi, Amba shines along with Sri Kalvar, Mahavarahi, Rajamatangi, Ishtasiddhi Vinayaka, Santana Ganapati, Sowbhagya Ganapati, Sage Durvasa, Bhairava, Shasta with Purna and Pushkala, Naga Subrahmanya, Annapurna, Durga, Bhairava, Adi Pitheshwari Kala Samkarshini Kali, Varasiddhi Vinayaka, Vishwanatha, Bhuta Bandhana Mahavishnu etc. The story of Bhandasura would tell that after killing the asura, in deference to the command of the Goddess Sri Kamakshi, the Devas then buried Bhandakasura, installed a Jayasthamba and constructed a passage from there leading to Bilakasa. This is the sacred Biladwara to which abhishekam is performed on aippasi puram. They also constructed a mandapam with 24 pillars symbolizing the 24 letters of the sacred hymn “Gayatri” and named it Gayatri Mandapam.

Although not entirely, sincere effort has been taken to bring many deities similar to Kamakshi Amman temple to GG Temple in Chicagoland. The deities were sculpted in Kanchipuram, kept in the sanctum of Ekambareswarar temple, blessed by Kanchi Acharyas before shipping to Chicago.

Kanchipuram is not complete without mentioning the glorious Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Devastanam that was started by Adi Sankara. Similar to Kamakshi Amman temple where one would get darshan of Adi Acharya at the Sannidhi where He attained multi before entering the ambal sannidhi, in GG Temple one would get darshan of Adi Sankara with four sishyas and Mahaperiyava. There is no doubt that GG Temple brings the similar vibration of Mokshapuri Kanchi in Chicagoland
